[Belthazar really ought to be resting but he's feeling loads better after Tadashi's expertise and Adra's little healing boost. He practically trips on his robes as he runs down to show Hiro, because Hiro is actually interested in magic and maybe they can do something with this.]
[Belth whirls around to see Hiro. He is actually grinning from ear to ear, though of course it has a mischievous edge to it. He's not a kid who smiles often and he probably doesn't know how to grin without coming off psychotic.
... He's a work in progress.]
I think I've figured out a way to make something like a mana gem, but renewable. Do you want to see?
[He should be nervous. Kaneis told him about the arm thing, didn't he? If he didn't, he should. Christ.]
Right!
[He stands in the middle of the hallway and concentrates. Runes form in the air around him. He holds his hands out, an imaginary wind nipping at his black and gold robes. The runes gently coalesce into a tightly-wound ball of light, which Belth takes into his hands and turns over. It becomes a gem like cloudy amethyst. It's made of mana-- pulsing with energy now, a gentle shine.]
I've inscribed it with the runes for channeling but I also added a renewable helix that takes in the light around it and converts it into mana like a plant. I can't believe I didn't think of that sooner. Regardless, it has enough power in it to make one of your machines run, I think-- though of course it'll need a few more tests, a little bit of tweaking, perhaps some kind of failsafe so that it doesn't start channeling when some unsuspecting mage touches it. Runes are very finicky and the last time I tried to make a knot to prevent that sort of thing it ended up not working at all but I feel very good about this. It might even solve my mana problem!
If you want to access the power all you have to do is touch it like so--
[He touches it with his fingernail, intending to siphon a little bit of mana from it.]
The entire thing detonates violently, the sheer force knocking Belth back into a wall. Also there are... scorch marks extending from the epicenter, nice and obvious and black.
[he listens so intently; it really sounds like belthazar has figured out how to solve this very prominent problem. but then... it explodes. and hiro is throwing his arms up and curling in on himself.]
SHIT!
[oh my god he's going to get in trouble if tadashi hears that]
Belthazar!
[let him just... panic and scramble over to where belth hit the wall.]
[Belth is sitting on the floor now, looking stunned, but then... he starts laughing. And laughing. Like he just saw the funniest thing in the universe or found the hyperbole and a half corn. He's totally fine, just... well, he's got a little soot on his cheeks but yes he's fine.
He's just gigglefitting so hard he might end up crying but that's fine... right...]
[He squeaks as he tries to breathe, then laughs even more. His face is definitely red and there are tears streaming down his cheeks again. Oh my god, child.
He's fine though, aside from laughing too hard to move.
Give him another minute and he'll make an effort to stifle his giggling and shove it down.]
Maybe putting a limit on that might make it less likely.
[now he's thinking about it too]
But you'd wanna make sure you have enough for two or three dosages if you're using it to keep yourself fed, just in case you can't recharge it for a bit.
... You won't have to. I don't know if this is a necessity just because of what you are, or if it's something else, and you don't have to tell me, but... It sounds like, if you can perfect this, you won't have to hurt anybody, even people who give you permission to.
If you can get this to work, I can create artificial sunlight for it.
Yep. Working on growing actual crops, and also working on medical herbs. Most of the planning's been done by other ships, but I'm the one who's been making the grow lights for them. I could make a sunlight chamber for you to put the stones in.
Don't make the sunlight chamber until I've perfected the orb. It's too volatile to use right now. If I can't stabilize it I'll have to scrap it entirely.
action; mid april
Hiro! Where are you? I've made a breakthrough!

Belthazar?

There's no sign of the orb. It's probably gone.]

That was... hilarious.

[and then he's probably going to laugh, too.]
Oh my god, Belthazar, you dork.

It worked, didn't it? It was an energy source. And it put out energy.

I thought I did, but perhaps that was the wrong rune. I'll have to check my notes.

But you'd wanna make sure you have enough for two or three dosages if you're using it to keep yourself fed, just in case you can't recharge it for a bit.
no subject
Yes, that was the plan... until it exploded, that is.
[A pause.] Adra has been helping me. But I do want to be-- independent.
no subject
You'll be more independent when you aren't hurting for mana. This is kind of a huge thing for you, isn't it?
no subject
... The first time I drained mana from something, it died. It just... crumbled into ashes in my hands.
I never had a talent for healing, but I don't want to hurt people to survive.

If you can get this to work, I can create artificial sunlight for it.
no subject
... I like that, [he says after a moment.] Artificial sunlight? Are you growing a garden?

But I will find something that works.
