[ LOW BLOW, LITTLE BROTHER. tadashi stares at him in grim, contemplative silence for a beat. finally, he just deadpans: ]

I'm going to shave your eyebrows in your sleep.

You wouldn't dare.

There are only so many jokes about my ears my honor will allow me to take.

Look, one a day isn't that bad. You look in the mirror what, ten times more often than that?

Hey! [ HAHAHA good job hiro you've actually embarrassed him a little. ] I'm not that vain. Just because one of us has a sense of style...

[ he's going to yawn RIGHT INTO THE CAMERA. ]

Keep telling yourself that. Night, brat.

Grooooss. I can practically smell your bad breath.

And, hey- Hiro.

[He was about to go ahead and turn that off, too.]

Just a few more days, right? Pretty hard to sleep without the rhythmic sounds of you snoring and mumbling all night.

[He looks conflicted for a second, struggling between the intense need for his brother's companionship and the equally intense desire to hide that. But he settles on sighing, defeated.]

I know. I can make it. You're the one who has to be alone over there.

[ he shrugs one shoulder lightly, dismissively. ]

Nah. I'm not alone.

[ because of the communicator. at least he's not cut off from contact with people. ]

[It's not the same, he wants to say, but he knows Tadashi knows that. He's dismissing it because it's easier that way.

[Hiro, however, doesn't find it quite as easy right now. Maybe after he's gotten to see him again, it wouldn't be quite as hard to separate, but right now... Every time he wakes up, he's afraid Tadashi coming back is a dream.

[When he speaks again, it's quieter.]

... Can we keep the communicator on?

While we sleep?

[ it isn't a 'no.' he's just a little surprised by the request, trying to make sure that he's understanding it right. shouldn't hiro be rejoicing in the fact that he doesn't have to share sleeping quarters with his big brother for once in his life? ]

[if he's gonna be forced to share sleeping quarters anyway one of the people he's sharing with damn well better be the one who knows exactly how he sounds when he's having a nightmare.]

... Yeah?

[He kind of winces--this is obviously a little hard to ask.]

It's stupid, I mean, I'm 14...

[ it's a little awkward, sure - where is he supposed to put the communicator? he doesn't want to roll over onto it and give hiro a video full of smushed face and drool, after all. but Something Is Up, and it's Something Hiro Won't Talk About Yet^tm, so tadashi just cuts hiro off after his wince. ]

Yeah. It can get pretty creepy here at night. That'd help a lot.

... Okay.

[And he shifts where he sits, which, lookie there, is actually on the bed for once instead of hi pulling an all-nighter on a project. He lays down and bundles up, and props the communicator up on an extra pillow from one of the empty beds.]

Good?

[ tadashi balances his as best as he can - it ends up showing part of his head and a lot of the ceiling, but he's working with what he has, okay? ]

Yeah. Thanks. This'll help a lot.

[ and bless him, he sounds absolutely sincere. this is totally for himself and not at all for you hiro gosh. ]

[totally. all for you. if i wake up in the middle of the night from a fiery explosion dream you're gonna be right there and that is not what this is for.
